Monson Stun Rivals

RTW Monson started this year’s National Arena League (Premier Division) with a strong third place in one of the toughest divisions in the Country. Going into the first round ranked fifth they surprised their rivals with repeated strong performances. After thirty events they moved into second place creating a stunned silence from the crowd. Although they couldn’t hold that position, their final third place was a major achievement for the club.

Last year just avoiding relegation gave the club a massive boost in what turned out to be a very successful year. Head Coach Graham Bassi commented “Our goal was to attain a mid-table position and to monitor our progress against the bigger clubs. Third place gives us the opportunity to raise the bar again.”

Monson swimmers gained five first places with Jemimah Berkeley and Anna Leman both winning their Breaststroke events. Newcomer Teilo Williams showed his potential by winning the 100m Freestyle and young ten-year-old Aran Bissett made a fantastic start to his Arena career winning the 50m Breaststroke and 50m Backstroke whilst competing against the 11-year-old category.

Out of the fifty events from last year, Monson swimmers have moved forward in forty. The atmosphere created by the team showed everyone present the club’s future potential.

Bassi said “I am extremely pleased with the club’s progress; we are stronger in depth and our skills are improving on a daily basis. We know the work that has to be done and over the next few years as we aim to establish ourselves as a team that can constantly compete in the National finals.”

The team now moves onto round two in four weeks’ time with the final rounds in December.

The club has a learn to swim programme that leads into a Rookies team and then into the competitive programme. Anyone interested in joining can obtain details from the club’s website: www.rtwmonson.org
